Well, after a hectic couple of weeks we decided we needed a little break….after all it has been nearly a month since our last rest 🙂 Where better to chill out than on an island in Indonesia which overlooks Komodo Island. We stayed in Labuan Bajo which is on the island of Flores, about 350 miles east of Bali. Our hotel was right on the beach which gave us some of the most amazing sunsets over Komodo.
Obviously we had to make the trip to Komodo to see the famous dragons in the wild. After a 2 hour boat journey we made it and were greeted by guides who had to go everywhere with us because of the danger posed by the dragons. Komodo dragons have no predators, grow to 3 metres, can run, swim and climb trees faster than humans, and will happily eat a whole water buffalo….in the past year they have attacked and hospitalised 4 humans. So with that knowledge we felt incredibly safe that our guide protected us with a stick!!!
As we walked around the island we saw 7 Komodos going about their daily business of stalking animals and sheltering from the blistering heat. We were very fortunate to see an adolescent dragon as they normally stay in the trees until they are big enough to defend themselves. Towards the end of our trip a couple of dragons were very interested in us, Michelle was getting scared and was hiding behind our guide and myself for protection, luckily the stick must have put the dragons off as they just waddled off to have a snooze.
On the way back we stopped off at a secluded island to do some snorkelling….and much needed cooling off!
After 7 days of bliss we headed to Bali for a couple of nights. Bali is living up to our expectations of being a party island with nice beaches. We decided we may as well join in and sample the many cocktails on offer!
Next up…..Gladstone in Australia to meet Michelle’s family for the first time and experience a hot Xmas – exciting times!
