We decided to book a couple of nights at Heron Island which is an island in the Great Barrier Reef….The island is a 2 hour ferry ride from Gladstone (Michelle’s home town) which even though it was a smooth journey, over a dozen people were sick in their seats!
Heron is world renowned for its diving, snorkeling, turtles and bird life…within 5 minutes of being on the island Michelle was crapped on! I was obviously sympathetic and didn’t snigger once, however I got my payback as we walked to dinner a bird decided to get me!
During our time there, we were fortunate to see turtles laying their eggs on the beach. As we made our way along the beach in the evening we would see turtles swimming in the sea, slowly making their way up the beach, throwing sand several metres down the beach whilst they dug their nest.
The following day we did a couple of dives, the first was still and we had good visibility…..with the highlights beings Manta Rays, Loggerhead Turtles and various colourful reef fish.
The second dive, the currents had increased and we did our first drift dive…in the beginning this was a little unsettling but once we got used to it, we just sat back and watched the reef go by!
The following day we went for a snorkel around the pier where we had black tip reef sharks, shovel nose sharks and sting rays surrounding us. We were both a little nervous especially as the sharks seemed very interested in us!
On the journey back the sea was quite rough which resulted in even more people vomiting….thankfully both of us came through unscathed!
It was certainly a very special place and couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful introduction to Oz!
We wish you all a very Merry Christmas from down under! Will be thinking of you all whilst we gorge on seafood, drink beers and play cricket in the blazing hot sun! 🙂
