Happy new year! Hope everyone saw 2014 in with a bang!
We spent a few days in Melbourne; the place where they have four seasons in one day! 38 degrees one minute,15 the next! We did a day at the MCG to watch the Ashes where unfortunately England didn’t do so well…. 🙂 Aussie Aussie Aussie, oi oi oi!
The main reason for coming to Melbourne was to celebrate a wedding ceremony with Jade and Pete…it all started at a beautiful beach with a wine ceremony, followed by two vineyards and an amazing lunch overlooking Mornington Peninsula.
We made our way to Sydney on New Years Eve to see the famous fireworks….we found a spot at Blues Point along with thousands of other people. We sat for ten hours on concrete waiting for midnight to arrive…no alcohol was allowed, the toilet queues were 500 people deep along with a two and a half hour wait for the dunny…. But despite all of this, it was well worth it! The clock struck twelve and the sky lit up….fireworks off the Harbour Bridge and Opera House were an amazing sight and there was certainly a buzz in the air as Sydney celebrated!
The following day we did the touristy thing and wandered around the Opera House and walked across the Harbour Bridge…taking in the sights and enjoying the 37 degrees heat! We couldn’t come to Sydney without seeing Bondi Beach…. Yes the sand is really white and the water is warm but I still don’t see what the attraction is! Perhaps minus a few thousand tourists might make it more pleasurable!
To finish off our time in Australia, we went to Taronga Zoo so Andy could see a Koala Bear…. Unfortunately holding them in NSW is banned but we managed to see quite a few munching away on eucalyptus leaves amongst the trees. To top it off we saw a Platypus and Tasmanian Devil which made our Aussie animal list complete!
We couldn’t come to Sydney without trying Sydney Rock Oysters…. We had them three ways; natural, fried and a bloody Mary shot. They were delicious and slid down the throat rather too easily! 😉
We have both enjoyed our time in Australia…. 3 1/2 weeks of luxury, being spoilt by my lovely family, using a hair dryer and straighteners for the first time since September, eating like kings and being generally pretty lazy…. Its now time to get back into back packer mode as our adventure continues!
Next stop – Fiji.
