The first thing we noticed immediately about this beautiful place is that no one is in a hurry to do anything….everyone operates on ‘Fiji Time’ which basically means it will get done when it gets done and not before!
We had only been in our hostel for half an hour before some man offered us the famous kava drink…he had his hands in what looked like a washing up bowl squeezing something between his fingers. I thought he was washing the windows until he bought over a shell filled with some grey liquid. He told us to drink it and we soon felt the effects of a numb tongue… Can’t say I liked the taste, all I could think about was where has his hands been?!
The boat ride consisted of drinking champagne, eating fresh fish cooked on the BBQ, listening to Fijian men sing and play guitars…oh and the character who plays Andy Barrett from Home and Away was sat a couple of metres away from us!
We visited a small village on one of the islands to experience every day life…a lot of houses unfortunately had been demolished from the last cyclone they had the year before.
We decided to resort hop around the main island and stayed in some great places….lots of swimming, chilling out and watching the Fijian International Rugby 7’s Team swim and shower became a daily routine….well for me, not Andy 🙂 turns out they were staying at our resort for two weeks training!
We made our way north of the island by bus….no air conditioning or toilet, 5 hours of unbearable heat sitting on vinyl chairs which were soon drenched in sweat…..the bus missed our stop so we were thrown out in the middle of nowhere with our back packs, walking up a dirt road in 35 degrees heat. We eventually made it to our next destination….
Next stop, Hawaii.
